What is tranquility? By definition, it is the quality or state of being tranquil—calm. But what makes something truly tranquil? Is it the absence of chaos and unpredictability that many of us crave? Or is it the ability to remain balanced and steady despite what surrounds us?

Ikiglow is an exploration of the idea of tranquility. Based on the Japanese saying Ikigai (生き甲斐), "a reason for being", It seeks to create a warm, inviting light within a space that is balanced amid disorder, yet still contains an element of its own subtle chaos. In this way, the piece is designed to shine both during the day and at night.

The work will be crafted from wenge wood combined with glass or plastic featuring a textured, noise-like surface. The lighting will gradually brighten when motion is detected and fade when the space becomes still. A touch sensor will also allow the light to be turned on or off manually, independent of motion.

This work is still in development of being built
