People often sacrifice sleep for work, disrupting their circadian rhythm and leading to chronic fatigue—especially among essential workers like nurses, doctors, and pilots, where this can pose serious risks. While sleep itself cannot always be immediately addressed, maintaining alertness until rest is possible can be. Existing solutions like alarms, therapy lights, or caffeine are often impractical or ineffective. This project explores smell as an alternative, leveraging its strong connection to memory and alertness. By combining scent with wearable ceramics, I designed jewelry pieces that absorb and slowly release essential oils. The necklace provides continuous stimulation, while the bracelet allows for intermittent use, offering a subtle, portable way to promote wakefulness.
Fabrication was created by creating 3D model and printing them to create a 2-part plaster mold for slip casting to allow the pieces to be hollow.
This design targets working women but can expand to other groups in the future with alternate designs.
